WORLD CONGRESS ON BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AND MEDICAL PHYSICS COMES TO AUSTRALIA

IUPESM is the World Congress on Physical Sciences and Engineering in Medicine and is held every three years. This year it will be held in Adelaide, at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 29 Sept - 4 Oct 2025. It is the first time in Australia since 2003.

IUPESM or as it is more colloquially known, WC2025 is jointly sponsored by the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE).

The local host organisations are the Australasian College of Physical Sciences and Engineering in Medicine (ACPSEM) and Engineers Australia’s College of Biomedical Engineering.

This year WC2025 will incorporate EPSM/ABEC 2025, ICMP 2025 and AOCMP 2025.

The theme of the conference is

Bridging the Gap: Science, Technology, and Clinical Practice for a Sustainable World.

Standards of Practice for Clinical Engineers

The Clinical Engineering Standards of Practice (SoP) has been developed by the National Committee for Clinical Engineering (NCCE) with feedback from the clinical/biomedical engineering community including SMBE members. A discussion forum was held at SMBE 2023 in Ulladulla NSW in March 2023 with contributions from attendees incorporated into the document.

The SoP has been endorsed by the College of Biomedical Engineering and published under Engineers Australia's banner as the Australian Clinical Engineering Services Guide V.2.0

SMBE Vic

The Society for Medical and Biological Engineering (Victoria) was formed in Australia in March 1960 with the aim of providing a common meeting ground for all those interested in the application and use of engineering techniques in medicine and biology. The Society membership includes engineers, company representatives, medical specialists, scientists, technicians, radiographers, nurses, research workers, students and generally, people who have an interest in the field and its contribution to the advancement of health care.

To advance knowledge and understanding in this field, the Society conducts meetings on a regular basis. The meetings may take the form of a visit to an institution of interest, a seminar or a talk by a guest speaker. An opportunity for informal discussion and socialising over a light supper generally occurs at the conclusion of each meeting. Considerable care is taken in the planning of meetings to ensure that the membership’s broad range of expertise and interests are catered for.

The growth and development of the Society from its formation in 1960 to the present day, is indicative of the need for a society that encompasses the whole area of engineering and biological science in its application and contribution to health care. Similar societies are active in most states of Australia. The Society plays an active role in relevant Biomedical Engineering Conferences.

The Society offers its members a unique opportunity for keeping contact with and learning about, procedures that may be useful in their particular spheres of interest. To this end, SMBE Vic hosts live and online technical meetings almost every month during the year, and has a video library of meetings that have been held online over the past few years.

The growth and development of the Society from its formation in Adelaide in 1966 to the present day, is indicative of the need for a society that encompasses the whole area of engineering and biological science in its application and contribution to health care. Similar societies are active in most states of Australia. These state groups have been formed into an Australian Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (AFMBE) and this body was affiliated with the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) at the beginning of 1967. The Society plays an active role in relevant Biomedical Engineering Conferences.

The Society offers its members a unique opportunity for keeping contact with and learning about, procedures that may be useful in their particular spheres of interest. A newsletter is published regularly and sent to all members.

During the past few years SMBE SA/NT has continued its program of technical meetings, site visits and its well loved Christmas networking function.
